I was born in 1980 in a white house on the prairie to nomadic parents who, weeks after my birth, headed back out west to, once again, join forces with other counterculture folks. I spent the majority of my childhood back in Iowa on my Grandparents farm but the west didn’t stop calling my name. After attending university in Iowa and gaining a degree in studio arts, I made the move to California.
At a young age, I became aware that creating made me feel good and made sense. The motivation behind my artwork remains the same. It lends a great sense of purpose to my time here. There is no angle of manipulation from my side. Very rarly do I plan or calculate exactly what is going onto the surface, the full image finds its way out to me. Certain forms and symbols are familiar to my mind and hand so appear often in my pieces. Over the years, I have come to appreciate the repetitive aspects of mark-making and how meditative and grounding it can be, while simultaneously creating movement. The evolution of a piece to its completion is real and satifying on many levels. My artwork is a way for me to communicate to anyone willing to take the time and energy to look at and appreciate it.
