Andrew Ward

Andrew Ward was born on August 9, 1956. He is a survivor of the Palm Sunday tornado cluster that occurred on April 7, 1965, in Oberlin, Ohio. On that night, his father, Addison Werner Ward, and brother, Peter Ward, died instantly. Andrew was blown clear of the family home, which was destroyed. He regained his senses where he landed in a nearby agricultural field, and went on foot to find help for his family. This event forever changed his outlook on life. He now considers himself to be living for three souls.

Andrew was among the crew who sailed a Kettenburg 41 sloop, the Black Saint, from Santa Cruz to Lahaina, Maui, in 1987.

In 1995 Andrew was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, Stage 4. He was accepted to a clinical trial at Stanford Hospital and received high-dose chemo and radiation, as well as an autonomous bone marrow transplant. It was during this time that he married the love of his life, Dori.

Andrew worked for 12 years as a Lifeguard and Firefighter Reserve for the City of Santa Cruz in the 1980’s and 90’s. He has sailed, surfed, and fished in the Monterey Bay since the 1960’s. As a founding member of the Santa Cruz chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, he was involved in the inception of the Blue Water Task Force.

His art is based on these experiences, and is oceanic/nautical in nature.

To protect the dwindling fisheries in our state, Andrew has given up sport fishing. He now makes art that draws from his time on the water. He hopes to influence the world to love fish as dearly as he does by creating art about the sea that is lifelike and beautiful.

His Art Fish are designed to hang in small schools. Quasi bas-relief, and invisibly wired for wall-hanging, they are unique and hand-built. Made of stoneware clay, they are fired to Cone 5, and made in signed, numbered editions of four, six, or eight.

His studio is located at 411 Martin Road in Bonny Doon, California, in the Santa Cruz Mountains near Davenport, where he lives with his wife, Dori, his Australian Shepherd, Mooka, and his cats, Butki and Cheetah.
