Karen Asherah is a fine artist specializing in animal and nature photography. Most of her images are from Felton and locations around the Central Coast of California. Karen is passionate about representing the unique character and personality of her subjects. Many of her images include horses at liberty. Through her guardianship of a Paint horse, Karen is connected to the equine community and knows many of her equine subjects personally. Herd dynamics and inter-species communication are especially interesting to Karen. Many of her images illustrate horses relating with each other, their environment, as well as with humans.
Karen’s mother was a portrait artist who encouraged Karen’s artistic endeavors from an early age. She attended art school at the California College of Arts and Crafts, now California College of the Arts in the San Francisco Bay Area. From the early 1970’s through the mid-1980’s, Karen worked in the visual merchandising and graphic arts fields before beginning a career in social work. She has always found self-expression through the visual arts but it has been in the last five years, that photography, in particular, has become central in Karen’s life. While she is primarily self-taught, Karen takes workshops whenever she can and has studied with Serephina Landgrebe and Tony Stromberg among others.
Karen can spend hours observing and relating to her subjects. Once she has a collection of photographs, she reviews and edits them using software such as Photoshop. Karen’s images are professionally printed with archival inks on photographic paper and wrapped canvas. Karen also has a large line of greeting cards and other products imprinted with her images.
For the last several years, Karen has been selling her work through galleries, art & wine festivals, shops and coffee houses. She has also participated in juried shows at the Santa Cruz Art League and Triton Museum in Santa Clara, CA.
Karen contributes a portion of her income from sales, to animal welfare organizations.
“I look for the expressions of the Spirit, present within all creatures and kin”. Karen Asherah
